Seminar 1
Understanding and Collecting Maki-e (Japanese lacquer) Pens - David Uskow

1pm Saturday, June 5

Objective: To provide a wide overview of Dunhill-Namiki and Lacquer Pens with emphasis on vintage Namiki, and Pilot Maki-e as well as an introduction to newer Namiki offerings.
David Ushkow has been a pen collector for 10 years. 8 years ago, he discovered Pilot maki-e pens and was instantly enthralled by them. Over the years, he has become the major importer and dealer of both vintage and new Maki-e pens. He does not represent any manufacturer, however.

David has written articles for STYLOPHILES-ON-LINE, and is a regular contributor to STYLUS MAGAZINE.

Recognizing that this field of collecting has grown increasingly popular, new collectors tend to shy away from vintage pens, due primarily to a lack of information.
This session will provide an overview of Maki-e as ART, and how to love and appreciate it.

David will display Photos of previously unknown treasures, as well bring interesting
examples of pens from the 1930’s to present which he has for sale at his booth.

This Seminar is meant for both new and advanced collectors. A lively question and answer period will follow.

Seminar 2
Fountain Pens, Practical Elegance - Deb Kinney

2pm Saturday, June 5

Deb will offer a guide for new collectors, beginners and folks interested in fountain pens. This will include fountain pen history; a discussion of the four big manufacturers; various ink-filling systems; how to choose a pen; how to use different nibs. Deb has been collecting for twenty years. She is co-founder of the Triangle Pen Club. She has been repairing and restoring pens for eight years and recently began grinding custom nibs. Space is limited so registration recommended.
